Folk of the Air (#1)
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black was released this January 2nd, 2018.
This fae-filled fantasy was one of the most unique and unusual worlds I have ever encountered, and maybe THE best Folk interpretation ever. In this universe, fae, imps, nyriads, and other mythical creatures all coexist and are ruled by one High King.
Jude is a human living in the world of powerful fae. She is surrounded by the royals, but doesn't fit in AT ALL and is routinely abused by her peers and even servants. But by learning the ruthless tricks of her people from all of the cruel princes (Yes, plural. There are loads of them.) she is determined to rise above them and take some power for herself.
So, first of all, the world is beautiful and stunning. You can easily get lost in it (as humans do), but don't really expect any sweet love stories or happy endings. This book is VERY reminiscent of Three Dark Crowns. Expect dark plots, court intrigue, and general violence. There is little love lost between any of the characters, and Jude comes into conflict with just about everyone she knows.
If you like a story about a girl who rises to challenges, never backs down, and does whatever it takes to earn her place in history, then you will enjoy The Cruel Prince(s).
